Pigeon Entry 3.0 (Freeware Application)
this page was last modified 6th April 2005

Description
You can use Pigeon Entry to fill out your race entry form or just print out blank forms. Drag 'n' Drop birds from your loft into your basket and then drag your whole basket into the race entry form.

You can add your birds (Full metal ring particulars, colour and sex) to your virtual loft. If a bird goes missing it can be tagged as missing and this prevents you adding it to your basket or the race entry form until the bird has been found. If a bird is killed then it can be removed from the loft.

Also you can add all your race points and distances, but this is trivial to fill in by-hand unlike writing all the full ring numbers week-after-week.

The software is provided free and 'as is'. The software must NOT be sold. You may copy/distribute the software freely to anybody and I urge people to put it on CD and pass it round their club and federation to spread the word.

Using the software
A default flyer, club and race distances have been installed with the software. This is just to allow you to play about immediately. (Left Button Down) Drag a bird from your loft to your basket. When you've got all birds that your racing then drag the basket to the race entry grid - that's it!

Press Print.

If you are racing more than 22 birds then a second, third sheet etc is produced automatically.

It's a very simple program - when you are happy with how it works then kill all the birds in the loft and delete all the race points and add your own particulars.

The application is free because it's designed to generate more interest in the club software for calculating all the race results on the night. I would greatly appreciate any comments from people using this software.

New features
Additional Race Sheet information:

Federation, Clock Station and Telephone. All your details are saved in an INI file so that you do not need to retype them every time the application is opened.

Now you can sort the birds in the loft by AtoZ and ZtoA and also by the sex.

File Support:

V3 has the ability to open and save your race sheets. This saves you from having to complete it all in one sitting. If you fly a large amount of birds then you'll probably want to compile your sheet over a couple of nights.

Or even, for example, alternate your birds over the weeks so you could set up (say) 2 saved files for odd and even weeks.

If you lose a bird because it's either missing or killed then the program will not put missing birds into the basket or race for obvious reasons. Unfortunately that makes the saved files less useful as a permanent record. i.e. you open week1 sheet to find that you've lost all your birds. Don't worry the missing and killed birds do remain in the saved file. And there's a special function under options menu to print saved file. All this does is by-pass the front end of the application and print out the total contents of the file rather than block missing birds.

The print saved file is only available for registered users - not as a limitation - but because the print function is inside the plugin(Sorry it was an afterthought).

Export to Text:

Nothing special here - just if want to go on to use the information in (say) a word processor.

e.g. your secretary needs a list of all your birds.

In which case, simply add all birds to basket and then race sheet and press export and the save the text file on (say) your desktop and then go on to print the text file in any text editors etc.

3 Styles of Printing:

1: Generic Race Entry Form designed for you play with immeadiatly to see if you like the application. You would need to ask permission from your Club and Federation to use them in a real race.

2: Custom Race Entry Form - you send me a scan of your Race Entry form and I compile it into a plugin and send it back to you. You can then print out your style of entry form. Without the registered plugin the custom sheet just prints out how to obtain a customised plugin.

3: Print Saved File - a way allowing you to print out old race sheets even though birds are missing or have been killed. See Open/Save for more information.
Custom Printing:

If you like this application and you think you'll use it then I can make it print out your style of race entry form.

Please send a scan of your sheet to ty@pigeonresult.co.uk A PDF file format is preferred and under 1MB if possible. An example of how you fill in the form is useful and also an explanation of any non-standard terminology will be useful. Because every club's form is different - I'll take your form and recreate it inside a dll(Dynamic Link Library) and send it back to you.

The next time you start the application - make sure you have the option to print custom checked from the options menu and your race entry data will be parsed through a custom print function.

Hopefully you've then got a system that you'll be able to use season after season.

It takes me a couple of hours to make the plugin and may take me a week-or-so to get it back to you. I really want to keep this a free service for everyone so please pass on your plugin to all your club and federation members.

Best regards,

Ty Harness - ty@pigeonresult.co.uk

PS - Your comments are much appreciated. If you like this application please try the fully functional (albeit with nag screens) shareware results calculator. If you would like to support the on-going development of Pigeon Entry and Pigeon Result please consider purchasing Pigeon Result which will remove all the nag screens. There's more information available in the help file for Pigeon Result.
